Are You Eligible For The Job Seekers Allowance?

To determine if you are eligible for the Job Seekers Allowance you must meet the following criteria:

  • You do not work
  • You work less than 16 hours per week
  • You are capable of working
  • Available for work
  • Actively seeking work
  • Below retirement age (65 for men, 60 for women)

Non-Eligibility

You are ineligible if you are under 18 and you are a full-time student.  If you are looking after children you may be an exception.  You should check with your Jobcentre Plus office to determine if you are eligible.

The Different Types of Jobseekers Allowance

  Contribution-based Jobseeker's Allowance

Contribution-based Job Seeker’s Allowance will be paid to you if you have made adequate National Insurance Contributions.

  Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance

Income based Job Seekers Allowance may be paid to you if you have not paid enough in National Insurance Contributions or you have only paid self-employment contributions or you are on a low-income.

JSA for 16 and 17 year olds

Job Seekers Allowance is available for sixteen and seventeen year olds for a short period if they meet the following circumstances:

  • You are forced to live away from your parents
  • You will suffer severe hardship if you do not receive benefits
  • You are a couple responsible for a child

Contact the local Jobcentre Plus office or benefits office if you meet these circumstances.  You may also be eligible for additional benefits including Young Person’s Bridging Allowance.

How Much Is Job Seekers Allowance?

  Contribution-based Job Seekers Allowance
Contribution-based Jobseeker’s Allowance is paid on a flat weekly rate according to your age:

  • Aged 18-24  =  £45.50/week

  • Aged 25+  =  £57.45/week

Your payments may be reduced if you receive a pension of more than £50 per week or delayed if you are getting final payments from your previous employer.

  Income-based Job Seekers Allowance
Income-based Jobseekers Allowance is paid at maximum weekly rates according to your relationship status and age:

  • Single Status Aged 18-24  =  £45.50/week

  • Single Status Aged 25+  =  £57.45/week

  • Couple Status Aged 18+  =  £90.10/week

  • Single Parent  =  £57.45/week

If you have savings over £6,000, you may receive reduced benefits.  If you have savings over £16,000, you may not qualify for benefits.

If your partner works 24 or more hours per week, you will not be eligible for income-based benefits but your contribution-based benefits should not be affected.  If your partner works less than 24 hours per week, it may also your benefit amount received.

How Do You Apply For A Job Seekers Allowance?

To apply for benefits, you may pick-up a form from the Jobcentre Plus office in your area.  You will be asked to bring the claim form to a New Jobseeker Interview.  Your advisor will explain the Jobseekers Allowance and form a “Jobseeker’s Agreement” with you.  This agreement will show the following:

  • Your availability for work
  • The kind of work that you desire
  • How you will look for work
  • How you might improve your chances of finding employment
  • The help and support that you will receive

You will be required to confirm your claim in person every two weeks and your situation will be reviewed at each interview.
